Blessing of the Waters @ Brightlingsea everywhere
Jun 7 @ 1:00 pm – 1:15 pm

BLESSING OF THE WATERS (but not as you knew it!)
Usually at this time of year we would be preparing for the massive celebration that is Brightlingsea’s Blessing of the Waters: a wonderful event complete with procession through town to the Hard, sprinkling water on the boats to bless them for the coming season and making a din to mark out Brightlingsea’s watery boundaries while decorated boats sail out and a woven cross is laid on the open water.
We are very reluctant to surrender our hard-won traditions to this wretched virus, but equally do not want to put anyone in danger of catching it, so we have some creative ideas for a socially distanced Blessing of the Waters on Sun 7 Jun since we can’t gather this year.
AT HOME
Fun ways to get involved for you to choose from…or you could do them all!
1) Give your house a ‘boat name’ just for the day. Put it up as a sign on your door or in your window. (see the Church facebook page for ideas)
2) Hang out your bunting / flags again or make some new ones – to mimic the boats ‘dressed’ for the blessing day.
3) If you have children/are a child at heart, perhaps some dressing up…?
4) Put model boats, pictures of boats or boat paraphernalia in your windows on the day.
5) Houses wanting to take part, send your address revcarolinebeckett@gmail.com or 01206308726 we could pop round and include you in a record of the day or even give you a drive-by blessing by water pistol!
6) At 13:00 on Sunday June 7th, all stand at your highest window and make the din so it will echo out over the water.
SOMEWHERE in Brightlingsea
Rev. Caroline can bless and sprinkle the boats where they are laid up at an unspecified time with appropriate words.
The cross will make it out to sea somehow and there will be pictures…
ONLINE
Those with boats, or family history of boats, post photos of them online on the day to fill social media with Brightlingsea’s glorious sailing tradition!
Post photos of your decorated houses! Listen to the fabulous Motley Crew who usually provide music for the day! https://motleycrew.me.uk/#action

Holy Mowers! @ All Saints Churchyard
Jun 11 @ 10:00 am – 12:30 pm

‘Holy Mowing’ has been resumed! The churchyard is already looking better. You can go and do a bit at the churchyard any day of the week (contact Sheila on 01206 30 65 74 for tools or equipment). Sheila is planning to resume regular Holy Mowing  on Thursdays from 4th June but government guidelines mean the groups will have to be restricted to groups of 6.

Enjoy our beautiful space. Come and help tend the churchyard at All Saints (second-largest churchyard in the country). Mow the grass, rake leaves, rake the mowings,  trim the verges, weed round the gravestones, trim the shrubs, flatten the molehills, pull out the suckers, plant bulbs….  You don’t have to do heavy work if you’re not up to it. Come for as long (or short) as you like or just come for coffee at 11.00. The churchyard now looks more loved than ever. Ring Sheila Crow on 30 65 74 for more information
