Children and Young People
Sparklers and All-age worship.
We now have a Sparklers meeting at 10.00 in St James on the 3rd Sunday of each month for children from three to twelve. It is an informal way to learn about and meet with God in St James on the 3rd Sunday of each month. Children under 4 must be accompanied by an adult. Parents or carers of children of 4 or over are encouraged to stay. Admission is free. The aim is to encourage children into faith and help them to grow into a relationship with God in a fun and engaging way and to provide an alternative experience to the adult style of worship and learning .
We also have All-age worship for children of any age (and their parents and families) in St James at 10.00 every time there is a fifth Sunday in the month.
Church Lads and Church Girls Brigade
This year has been quite busy with various functions. We had a good time at Brightlingsea Carnival and raised ourselves some funds. We also won 1st prize for our float which the children did a lot of work for and this was helped by some parents which was very much appreciated. The band took part and played at Alresford Primary School Fete which was a really nice afternoon.
We ended our last term in July with a beach party and we had a sand castle competition. The members also joined in games which some of the Officers put together, in fact nobody wanted to go home and it was getting late by the time we cleared up and left.
August saw us going to camp again, 23 of us travelled in convoy of a minibus and two cars. Thank goodness this year we didn’t encounter any hold ups and having left Brightlingsea at 6 am we arrived at camp at 1-30 pm. All of the members unloaded their luggage and found out which tent they were in and made themselves at home for the week. They had the chance to do all sorts of activities during the week and even those who were going in the lines for the first time settled in very well. This can be quite daunting for some who are only 10 as it is often their first time away from home. On the Tuesday they organised a day of activities in camp and they had a B.B.Q. There were all sorts of games and some involved water, which of course the children love. We also had a welcome visit by Father Peter and Lesley and they are both very well and loving life in Durham.
We have a wonderful Spiritual week in camp too, as our camp Chaplain plans the week around a theme. This year was all about loving, kindness, caring, and so the theme went on. We had two Parades, one at the start of the week on Saturday and one at the end of the week on Friday, there is also a short service every morning and the members join in with enthusiasm and love the hymns that we sing. They usually dance to these and get into the spirit of the Service.
Friendships are made which often last a lifetime and the mobiles are beeping on the way home with messages and for weeks and weeks after. Paul and I have friends which we met at camp 40 years ago and these are treasured even if we only see them once a year. Hazel Dines
Parade Service is on the first Sunday of each month (but not if that falls during school holidays). Those who can play an instrument are encouraged to join the group accompanying the hymns
The Brigade meets weekly on a Friday at St James’ Church (unless otherwise advertised) as follows:
Martins and Y Team: 5.30 – 7.30 pm (5 – 7 years). 6.30 (8-10 years)
Band: 7.30 – 8.30 pm
Juniors and Seniors: 8.30 – 9.30 pm (10 – 21 years)
We are always happy to see new members on Friday nights, so, if anyone wants to come and see what we do and joins they will always be welcome.
Our Company first started in Brightlingsea in 1904 and closed in 1921 due to the First World War. The present Company was started in 1959 and has continued to the present day. The ages that we work with are 5 years old to 21 years old. The aim of the Brigade is to Extend the Kingdom of Christ among Lads and Girls and our motto is “Fight the Good Fight”. We do badge work, drill and enjoy Fellowship, Faith and Fun. Our officers are all CRB checked and have the members’ interests at heart.
